Do Blind People See Dreams

A recent paper looks at visual activity in blind subjects dreams. It seems the longer you experience the world with sight the longer you will go on dreaming visually. One 1999 study looked at the dreams of 15 blind adults over a period of two months a total of 372 dreams.

Someone who goes blind in their senior years can experience vivid dreams for many years after losing their sight.

People who are born blind or become blind early in life before around five or seven years of age do not experience visual imagery when they dream.

People who became blind later typically do retain some visual imagery when they dream but less so than in sighted individuals. It was found that people with congenital blindness i e people blind since birth had no visual impressions in their dreams. Do blind people see in their dreams.

Blind people dream about much the same content as sighted people though the way they dream about it may be a little different. The first group had full vision the second turned blind at a certain stage in their life and the third one contained people who were born blind. Nevertheless the visual experience plays a central role.

Three different groups got investigated. There may be other elements to the experience including sounds touch taste and smells. Instead much like being awake for them their experience of dreams is rooted in other senses.

People who go blind after seven years of age do report visual dreams in the same way we perceive them. Dreams can contain all aspects of the senses from sight taste touch smell and sound. On the other hand people who lost their vision later in life did see images in their dreams but the amount of visual impressions in their dreams depended on the time period during which they saw.
